Fauré Requiem & Messiah Selections Holiday Concert - November 19, 2019

Westview High School Performing Arts Center | San Diego, California

In a night of inspired music, the choir performed Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, the best known of his larger works, as well as solo and chorus selections from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah.  They were accompanied by twelve local professional musicians to form a full chamber orchestra.  The two featured soloists were soprano Allyson Power and baritone Anthony Whitson-Martini.

Fauré’s Requiem is a uniquely beautiful mass for the dead which director Gray described as "intimate, comforting and a more peaceful view of death."  The selections from Handel’s Messiah, a holiday favorite, included the pastoral symphony, solo arias, and the popular “Hallelujah” chorus.

European Summer Performance Tour - June 23 to July 2, 2018

Prague, Czech Republic ∙ Vienna, Austria ∙ Salzburg, Austria

The Poway Community Choir and the Poway Symphonette were honored to be selected for the International Cantus Music and Cultural Festival in Salzburg, Austria in the summer of 2018.  Our performance tour took us to Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg, and we were fortunate to perform in many spectacular venues, including:

  • St. Peter's Church - Vienna, Austria

  • Melk Monastery - Melk, Austria

  • Great Hall of the Mozarteum - Salzburg, Austria

  • Ecumenical Celebration at the Salzburg Cathedral - Salzburg, Austria

  • Mirabell Gardens - Salzburg, Austria

  • Lakeside Promenade Music Pavilion - St. Gilgen, Austria

No whirlwind musical tour is complete without sightseeing!  Our choir members had the chance to explore these wonderful cities, and the local guides were lovely.  Some of the highlights of these adventures were:

  • Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and Prague's Old Town - Prague, Czech Republic

  • St. Peter's Church, Hofburg Palace, Innere Stadt (the "Inner City"), Schönbrunn Palace, and Gumpoldskirchen (a small wine village) - Vienna, Austria

  • Melk Monastery - Melk, Austria

  • Salzburg city tour, Mozart's Geburtshaus ("Birthplace"), Hohensalzburg Castle, Sound of Music bus tour (of course!), Lake District bus tour, and the village of St. Gilgen - Salzburg, Austria

The Cantus festival itself was a gathering of choirs and musical groups from around the globe, and sharing our music with one another was an amazing experience.  We were truly grateful to sing with such great people in these beautiful cities.
